John L. Hacker's career began in the 1890's when motor boating was gaining wide acceptance. John was drawn to boat racing as a mean of testing and refining hull designs.

He was attracted to the V-bottom design, reasoning that increased speed could be achieved by designing an improved hull to plane over the water rather than plow through it. The result was America's first racing hydroplane, "Kitty Hawk". In 1911 this boat reached speeds over 50 miles per hour. The quest for speed was on, and John L. Hacker was then considered a rising star among designers.
