Besides racing, John L. Hacker also competed for a share of the pleasure boat market.
In Detroit, sometime after World War 1, he began producing a popular line of 26' runabouts called the "Belle Isle Bearcat".
By 1920 Hacker boats had an unparallel reputation for style, beauty and speed. Hacker was a perfectionist whose designing skill was enhanced by an artistic flair that few others achieved. A subsequent refinement of the "Bearcat" was the "Dolphin", which offered a range of styles from 24' to 30' long. Hacker described this beautifully designed and constructed boat as his master-piece.
